Personal Knowledge Base

During this course I’ve learned so much about how to use technology as an organizer. I am a very structured and organized person. I do not work well in mess, therefore, I’ve never really used technology to rely on keeping things organized for me. Then you showed me Evernote.

As dramatic as this may sound, I really feel as though Evernote has opened up a whole new technological advance for me. Within my Evernote I’ve made notebooks and have kept things in dated order. Each day in class I would take notes on things that I found important, things that I found useful and things that I just wanted to remember for personal use. I kind of used Evernote as a journal of this course. Even though my Evernote might not be filled with 1,000 of notes, I know that within the upcoming semesters this tool will definitely be used in my other courses.

As for Evernote Web Clipper, I didn’t realize how much I would need it. I kind of just liked the idea of copying and pasting links and remembering the names of websites. This got a little tiring though when I was looking up articles for Teach for America. I gave Web Clipper a shot and found I really did enjoy it. I’m saddened to know that the PDF portion is only good for another couple of weeks then I have to start paying; which I probably won’t do because grad school is quite expensive and I need to save my pennies.

I think you’ve given me the idea that it is a good thing to entrust your work with technology since it is so prominent today. I’d like to explore more options with it. I think having such a fast-paced, short course didn’t really allow for the time of much exploration. I’ve gotten really comfortable with organizing my research work away from my notes and random notes. It’s helped me have a collection of notebooks and keep things in order. I’ve downloaded Evernote on my smart phone, but I still haven’t explored that option too much. I like the idea of having something quick at my fingertips though! Plus, I’m saving paper!

I think that my PKB and Evernote is really going to come in more handy once I have my own classroom. I feel that I’ll be using it quite a bit for lesson ideas, classroom strategy and important pieces of the news related to education. I think that many people and many teachers will definitely gain from this type of cumulative knowledge because it helps you to store old documents, articles and ideas without having to worry losing things. All of your information is in one place, and most likely, can be with you at all times.

The one thing that I have to say about PKB is that I felt like I was losing touch with my old ways, that I found really worked for me, of keeping notes and track of my information. I never did have a problem with organization skills, but learning how to use PKB and Evernote really changed my pretty set ways of doing things. I’m going to have to either changed completely over to PKB and Evernote, or just stick with my old ways of keeping track of my learning and organization. It’s a tough call because this is so convenient, but I also did not seem to have any problem with the way I was obtaining information before.

I do see maintaining a cumulative knowledge base as being very useful for students of all ages. I feel that the younger that they begin to realize this type of learning and organizing exist, the easier it will be for them. I see this as a problem for students who enter my classroom half-way through the year or at a much later time in their schoolings (8th or 9th grade); especially if the majority of their peers are already using this. The reason this could be a problem is because if the base of their schooling will be on how to use the tool, they might not gain a whole education. Another issue that I could potentially face as a classroom teacher is trying to distinguish when using your smart device is appropriate and when it is not. Though minor, I still feel this might be something I’ll have to think about when introducing any sort of daily technology.

On the other hand, I think this is great! I love the idea of my students using something like this to organize their information and notes. I think it’s also really great that students can take control of their own learning this way by documenting what they find important for them and for school assignments. It’ll be good for them to look back on to retrieve previously learned knowledge, but I think this is where another issue lies; what if this is all they rely on for information and not necessarily trusting themselves?
